White Kraft Paper
Bleached virgin kraft for direct food contact — bought on strength at low weight, and on what is deliberately left out of it.
What it is.
White kraft is the base paper behind takeaway bags, food wraps and paper carriers. It is made from bleached virgin pulp, and for food work the negatives matter as much as the positives: no recycled fibre in the furnish, optical brightening agents negative, and odour held to grade 1 — because a bag that smells of paper will make the food inside it smell of paper.
The specification is a strength-per-weight problem. A takeaway bag has to carry a hot, wet load without the handle tearing out, so tensile and tear are specified in both directions and tensile energy absorption is specified as well — that is the number that tells you how the bag behaves when it is snatched off a counter rather than lifted gently. Grammages run from around 40 to 65 g/m².
Cobb is held low so the paper does not go limp on contact with a damp load, and smoothness is specified separately for the two sides because only one of them is printed.
