What it is.
Tissue is two businesses in one grade name. A converter buys parent (jumbo) reels and runs its own embossing, ply-bonding and packaging. A distributor buys finished product. The specification conversation is completely different depending on which you are.
For parent reels the questions are reel width and diameter, core size, ply count and the furnish — virgin, recycled or a blend. For finished product they are sheet count, emboss pattern, packaging format and case configuration.
Softness, absorbency and wet strength are the three performance properties across both, and they trade against each other: a softer tissue is usually a weaker one, and a stronger one is usually less absorbent. Where you want to sit is a market decision.
