The separator inside an aluminium electrolytic capacitor — a paper specified in microns and in fibre chemistry.
What it is.
Capacitor paper holds the electrolyte and keeps the foils apart. It is one of the most tightly specified papers made: density and thickness are the primary variables, and the furnish is chosen for chemical stability because the sheet spends its life soaked in electrolyte inside a sealed can.
Mills classify it by type. Single-layer papers are made on cylinder or fourdrinier wires at densities from 0.65 to 0.90 g/cm³ and thicknesses from 20 to 60 µm. Double composite papers cover densities from 0.55 to 0.85 g/cm³ and thicknesses from 35 to 70 µm, in several fibre systems — W, W+S, W+D, W+C+D and W+M — each tuned to a different electrolyte and voltage regime.
