High Bulk FBB - GC1 / GC2

Folding boxboard bought on stiffness per gram — high bulk gives the same carton rigidity with less fibre in it.

What it is.

Folding boxboard is a multi-ply construction: bleached chemical pulp on the outside for print and food safety, mechanical pulp in the middle for bulk. GC1 has a white reverse, GC2 a cream reverse; both are coated on the print side. The mechanical middle ply is the point — it is light and thick, so the board stands up without carrying the weight a solid bleached board would.

That is what bulk measures. A high bulk board at a given grammage is thicker, and therefore stiffer, than a standard board at the same weight. Cartons are specified on stiffness, so the practical effect is that you can drop grammage and hold the same carton performance — which is where the cost saving comes from, not from the board being cheaper per tonne.

Whether you buy on grammage or on caliper depends on how your line is set up. Tell us which, along with the carton and the printing process, and we will match the grade.
