Directly metallised paper and board — a mirror aluminium surface on a paper base, for packaging that has to look metallic and still recycle as paper.
What it is.
Metallised paper replaces foil lamination. Instead of bonding an aluminium foil to paper, aluminium is vapour-deposited directly onto the sheet in a vacuum, so the metal layer is a fraction of the thickness of a foil. The pack looks metallic, and because there is so little aluminium it behaves as paper in a recycling stream rather than as a laminate.
The specification centres on the metal layer and its adhesion. A high-gloss direct-metallised liner is produced at 60 ±2.5 g/m² and 55 ±5 µm with thickness variation held under 3.5 %, interlayer adhesion ≥ 98 % by tape test, and colour difference ΔEab ≤ 2.0 against the reference. Kinetic friction is specified at 0.25 ±0.10 because the sheet has to run through a wrapping machine without slipping or grabbing.
For label work, a metallised wet-strength construction runs 71 ±3 g/m² on a 68 g/m² high wet-strength art base, with wet tensile ≥ 14 N/15 mm, alkali penetration under 120 s, metal-to-paper bond ≥ 4.0 N/24 mm and surface tension ≥ 36 dyne for print adhesion.
Food-contact hygiene limits are specified in full — total solvent residue, benzene series, formaldehyde, phthalates, PCP, PCB, aromatic amines and DIPN are all capped, and the sheet is required to be odour-free.
